Yay! A White Christmas

Just a couple of events I need to tell you about. I have been asked to put some artwork up at a corporate event taking place at The Loft, Leeds on the 2nd December. My work has also been requested to be displayed for six months at LS1. LS1 offers a very high profile viewing opportunity to their many clients from National/International business. The club hosts high level business events – from training, meetings to celebration. The owners of LS1 are very proactive supporters of the arts and are very open in their desire for my work to be seen by an optimum audience who will hopefully buy or commission. They are also the couple who bought my artists books and prints from the Trinity exhibition

I received a letter only this morning informing me that I have been accepted to the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate this coming April. The fair has run successfully for a number of years and represents the very best of British makers. Buyers who attend the fair come from a wide variety of outlets such as galleries, heritage outlets, interior design companies and independent retailers. The BCTF  also host an online catalogue called Design Edge. I have so much to prepare for the event but I am very excited that I have something so nice to do in spring, and being busy will not allow time for any post christmas winter blues to set in!

And now for the really fun part of the post how cool is the snow! I am loving it, the dogs are loving it, I have already made three snow angels and confused the dog by throwing snow balls for him. And everything looks so pretty and bright, it is such a welcome change to grey days with no light.

Above is a picture of my town square on Christmas Eve at midnight for our annual carols in the square! So this is my last post until the new year. I will leave you with this; “Merry Christmas To All And To All A Good Blog!”

Christmas Is On Its Way

Well the art fairs are well and truly in full swing. The time was that I used to be upset that I was galavanting all over the country so close to Christmas, but in truth I have grown to love it. Not a religious person but I am a Christmas person, I always have been, often to the annoyance of those around me. Traveling around to art and craft fairs during the lead up to Christmas suits me down to the ground, I get to listen to cheesy Christmas songs, get excited by helping people find special gift for loved ones and gift wrap – yes I am one of those people who loves to wrap presents, without any complaint! I also love that I get to meet and talk to so many people and get caught in the hustle and bustle of their day. The first of my art fairs this year is rather late but well worth a visit. I will be selling at The Arthouse as part of the Wakefield Art Walk on Wednesday 25th November 2009. Art Walk Official Website Follow the Wakefield Artwalk on Twitter

We have a great community art team in Hebden Bridge called HEADS and they organised a fantastic lantern parade with the children for the Christmas lights switch on, we then had a brass band and carols! Its at time like these that I do feel smug about my town and its strong community feel.

At The Heart Gallery

The Heart Gallery is a craft gallery gem in Hebden Bridge and winner of Best Newcomer at the Great Gift Retailer Awards in 2008. Alison Bartram, the owner asked me to take part in an exhibition entitled ‘re-new’ which celebrates artist and craftspeople who welcome you to a world of  creative recycling! New work by chosen designer/makers in different disciplines who work with recycled or sustainable materials and are inspired by reclamation processes. Designer/makers who love to create something new from something old and discarded and we hope you love their creations. I exhibited a range of my bags here that I use vintage fabric and buttons in and they sold very well there!

Installed and Ready

I have installed my series of artists books and had a great opening night. below are some images of the work that I completed and my accompanying statement.

The church can be seen as acting in a variety of roles, and these are reflected in the pieces.  Firstly, the church is a place of worship where people can give thanks and share their joy with others.  On the converse, the church is also a place of silent prayer and contemplation, a peaceful oasis, aside from, but not isolated from the river of life where individuals can reflect and take stock.  The church is also a place of music and song – a significant proportion of classical music has been inspired by the church or written for liturgical purposes, and this is a constant thread that has been present over the centuries.  One also needs to view the church as an architectural entity in itself, and one only needs to see the sheer magnificence of the great cathedrals to realise they are worthy of appreciation for the skill of the architects and craftsmen who toiled to make them.  The physical forms of the books themselves reflect the architectural shapes and contours that form Trinity Church.  Overlying all these attributes is the role of the church as a community, a place that should sit at the heart of the community, and be a driving force for societal change on both great and lesser scales.

A Write-up On The BBC Website

Divine Inspiration

A new exhibition at Holy Trinity Church showcases art inspired by the building hosting it.

‘BOaRlaNe’ is a new exhibition of original art work which is a site-specific response to the venue it is housed in: Holy Trinity Church on Boar Lane in the city centre.

Artists in the show have been inspired by the church’s architecture, scale and atmosphere. The main exhibition of mixed-media drawings and paintings, photographs, stained glass and audio-visual presentation, will showcase the artists’ unique response to the surrounding architecture.

Alongside the main show is a café exhibition of mixed media works by Miriam Laville. There will also be a short film by Bruce Rimell in the entrance porch, entitled ‘Human Download’.

Artists featured in the show are: Oliver Neilson, Jess Laljee, Sarah Hughes, Nicolette Lafonseca-Taylor, Catherine Corfield, Nick Claiden, Bruce Rimell and Miriam Laville. All of the artists are members of artsmix (a non-profit arts organisation that works in partnership with Leeds City College) and are based in Yorkshire.

The exhibition of original artwork will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Boar Lane from Thursday 4 June to Friday 19 June 2009 from 12noon – 4pm (closed Sundays and Mondays).

Being Site Specific

I spent the day at Trinity church in Leeds today drawing and taking pictures. Whenever I begin a piece of art I begin with extensive drawing, visual note taking, but it is not the aesthetics of a place that normally inspires me. I am inspired by stories, by people, by history and concept. Therefore when I am asked to create a site specific body of work the hook is not one that has already come to me, but one that I have to search for and find within the walls of this church.
